AARP Blacksburg Chapter is composed of approximately 200 senior citizens. The chapter serves the New River Valley though its original charter, issued in 1976, named the chapter Blacksburg AARP Chapter #2613. The chapter is engaged actively to provide its members educational programs and materials, leadership opportunities to govern the chapter and to plan events and activities for the community. 

 

The founder of AARP, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, provided a motto for all organization activities: To serve, not to be served. Listed below are examples of recent chapter activities:

 

An excellent chapter newsletter published four times each year

 

Monthly educational programs during its regular member meetings 

 

A biennial Health and Wellness Fair

 

An annual picnic

 

An annual holiday luncheon to celebrate chapter accomplishments

 

 

 

Active partnerships with other organizations including the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Virginia Tech, TimeBank of the NRV, the Cener for Gerontology at Virginia Tech, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Virginia Tech Retirees Association, AARP Virginia, the Agency on Aging in the NRV, Warm Herth Village Retirement Center, the YMCA at Virginia Tech, and the Community Foundation of the NRV that lead to cooperatively planned and executed activities

 

Periodic special events such as the LivingWell@50+ conference held in September 2015

 

Occasional major presentations by renowned authorities such the Disrupting Aging presentation and discussion with Dr. Bill Thomas, Gerontologist
